What's the best estate car on an £8000 budget?

I am looking for a decent family car that is still sporty to drive. I was thinking about a BMW 5 Series Touring or a Ford Mondeo. Currently I have a double pushchair so the boot needs to be big. Also, is a manual gearbox the more reliable choice for these cars?

In terms of a sporty driving experience, the BMW 5 Series Touring is definitely your best option, although for £8000 it might need to be a higher-mileage example. For that budget, a Skoda Octavia vRS estate is also worth a look - there should be a few examples of the third-generation car in your budget.
