Older Mercedes-Benz quality issues

I've heard you mention the reliability issues that Mercedes-Benz experienced from about 1999-2005, but did this affect ALL models?

I'm interested in buying a CL500 (or maybe 600) from this era, but am concerned about possible reliability issues.

Pretty much. Includes CLs. But only up to around 2004.
