Replacement for an X-Type

My friend has asked me for advice on part exchanging his Jaguar 2-litre X-Type on an 04 plate for an auto diesel up to £10,000. He is completely open to any suggestions, however they want reasonable economy and power for a mixture of local and distance trips. I have a Focus 2-litre 136bhp which is a nice car, but im sure there are many more options, any ideas please?
