Wandering E-Class steering

I recently purchased a used E280 with 45k on the clock , the steering does not feel right. It is not very precise and I have to work at keeping the car in a straight line (I understand it will not be as precise as the BMW 530D M sport I part exchanged and is a lot heavier than my wifes B180). I have had 4 wheel alignment carried out and it made little difference. The steering pump is working, could it be that it's not working fully or some other simple problem? All the tyres are very good with over 6mm of tread on each.

Might be the wheel size and tyre size. But even on 16" (the smallest wheel size), I've been confident enough to throw these cars around on a track.
