Recommended economical 4WD

I have £5-6k to spend on a car predominantly for work. I would like 4WD and it needs to have a high wheel base. Although 'tough' is preferred, more importantly it needs to be economical (min 35mpg consistently), capable on A and M roads, and durable. What can you recommend please, new or used? Is there such a suitable beast?

Nothing new. Maybe a used FIAT Panda 4x4 or a used Daihatsu Terios, but Daihatsus are no longer imported so parts will be difficult.
