Are seven year old tyres still safe?

I have a 7 year old Focus with the original back tyres. Tread depth is just over 4 mm. is it worth renewing these now due to their age or wait until they wear down to 3mm?

As a general rule it is recommended to replace tyres that are 10 years old regardless of condition, but tyres can deteriorate beyond safe use before this period. Look for signs of cracking and perishing, but the safest option would be to replace them sooner rather than later.
