Washer failure

I have a couple of problems with my Golf.

Firstly the front and rear washers are not working. Fluid is in the compartment and I can hear the motor trying to work but nothing comes out.

I also have a more worrying problem, there is a loud rattling noise coming from underneath the driver side of the car, but only when the car is idling or on low revs. This sometimes disappears some days and others I can hear it when I'm sitting in the car.

Also, when the car is idling the engine seems to be working quite hard, ie the the revs are goin higher than your would expect. Sounds like I am gently revving the engine.

I would guess that one or more of the washer pips is trapped or kinked, possibly in a bonnet hinge. You don't say if this is petrol or diesel. All Golfs of this age apart from the VR5 and VR6 are belt cam, so cannot be timing chain.
