Suitable tow cars

We used to own a Rover Landrover 3 (from new) but after 3 years and as soon as warranty had run out we changed it for a BMW 5 series touring model 520 diesel SE, a pre registered model with auto gearbox.

We tow a caravan and whilst the LR was perfect it spent most of the 3 years we had it in the local dealership being fixed under warranty. The BMW is a good car and very economical, I use it for business and cover about 20,000 mls in a year on business, combined with the trips we do in the caravan, including an annual trip to France.

My wife is unsure about towing with the BMW. In side winds it can be be a bit hairy especially if the van has not been packed as well as it should be.

We looked at a swap for a new BMW X3, which you have recommended to others, but the waiting list is currently at December 2011, and the local dealer only offered £17000 for my 59 plate BMW with 22,000 on the clock.

We have looked at Mercedes ML280 up to 2 years old. However what else can you suggest bearing in mind I will use it for motorway business use as well.

The best suggestion I can make is for you to join the Caravan Club and pay very close attention to its recommendations for loading the caravan for towing.
