Is my turbo broken?

I've got a Citroen Picasso 1.6 HDi. I lost engine power and an engine management light came on.

It turned out that the impeller on the turbo had broken.

I also had failure of an injector and carbon build up. Replaced them both as well as the oil pipes and flushed out the oil twice.

Now the engine light has gone off but white smoke is blowing from the exhaust.

The Citroen garage now say I need a new turbo as this one looks broken and is rattling (after only 4 miles and I did prime it with oil) and the exhaust is full of oil so I need a new one. What would cause this turbo to break so quickly?

Are you correct in the engine is putting out white smoke? White smoke normally indicates that the fuel injected into the clyinder is not burning correctly,(this smoke will normally burn your eyes) and is caused by engine /pump timing out, fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly, low engine compression or water/petrol in the fuel.

If the Turbo is faulty it will normally be indicated by Black smoke from the exhaust.

You may want to go to www.btnturbo.com and click on turbo tech. This should help you understand how the turbo works, and with fault diagnosis etc.
You will also see that they say that Turbo's rarely fail.
