How do I reprogramme the key for my VW?

Having replaced the battery in the fob of our 2011 VW Fox the fob works for the doors but will not start car. It did on one occasion but now shows a fault light on the dashboard. There are various ways of reconnecting on YouTube but I am reluctant to try these. Locksmiths are quoting hundreds of pounds but surely if the key used to work it must be fairly simple
to reprogramme it?

We would suggest that you try the following reset method:

Insert master key into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Within 30 seconds, insert the 2nd key into the driver’s door lock and lock the driver’s door manually.
Press the LOCK or UNLOCK button
Wait 2 seconds, then press the LOCK or UNLOCK button again
Switch ignition to the OFF position.
