What car would you suggest for someone with arthritis problems?

My wife has arthritis in both hands. She has great difficulty operating the gear levers into reverse and the button on the hand brakes on both our cars. Electric handbrakes probably would solve that problem. How should we overcome the gear lever problem? Are there any particular models of cars we should be looking at please?

We would suggest looking at automatic cars which would eliminate the need for changing gear at all, and many modern cars are fitted with automatic handbrakes. Automatic cars generally have a reduced requirement to use the handbrake in any case. Many Mercedes-Benz vehicles have an automatic transmission lever that is operated by a stalk, while manufacturers such as Ford and Jaguar have rotary gear selectors too.
