I want to export a UK car to France - how do I insure it for the journey there?
I have recently been given a 61 plate Zafira and I want to export it to my second/holiday/retirement home in France. But I'm having the devil's own job trying to find insurance for the journey down there.
I know I will need to get it re-registered as a French vehicle, contact the DVLA here, and pay all taxes etc. I just can't seem to work out what insurance I will need. One day insurance states that journey's must start and end in UK, so no export. And my insurance company for my other car here has said pretty much the same.
I couldn't afford to buy the same car in France.

Probably the best option here would be to buy the car and insure it as normal on a 12-month policy in the UK. The majority of standard insurance policies allow up to 30 days European cover despite Brexit so providing this is in your policy you can then drive it to your holiday home in France. Once it is there, you can then arrange to re-register the car in France and take out a domestic insurance policy there, remembering to complete all the correct export documentation with DVLA here. Once the car is in France and you are home, you can cancel your insurance policy but you may need to pay a small early termination penalty.
