Is is possible to buy a back-up battery for an electric car?
With a petrol/diesel car you can carry a can of fuel for emergencies - what's the equivalent for an EV? I have seen ZipCharge units in the USA, but they are very expensive. Is there a reasonably priced electric car battery backup unit available in the UK?
These may alleviate some potential EV owners "range anxiety", and I would argue that all manufacturers should supply one with a new car.

Currently there are very few portable electric chargers available in the UK, although this is likely to change as electric cars continue to increase in popularity.
The ZipCharge Go recently became available in the UK, and at present an outright purchase price is not available, but the company plan to offer them on a subscription basis for £49 a month.
Units such as these are more prevalent in the US, as it is such a large country there is a greater likelihood of being stranded a long way from the nearest charge point. In the UK this is less of an issue, even if there are fewer public charge points in total. It's also worth considering that carrying around another heavy battery in the boot of your EV all the time will actually impact your overall range, making it less likely that you'll reach the charging point you were heading for in the first place.
It seems unlikely that car manufacturers will offer these with new electric cars, as they are focussing their efforts on increasing the range of the in-built battery.
