Ford Mondeo 1.8LX 2000 W-reg - head gasket gone?

Engine has overheated for the first time ever. Genuine 80,000 miles and have been told that the head gasket has gone. Car drives fine, normal oil consumption, but heavy petrol consumption and loses water from filler tank for radiator. Is it the head gasket? Shall I get the work done or scrap it?

Very likely to be the head gasket. Marginal whether to fix or to scrap. Someone might buy it from you for a few hundred to fix themselves using their labour.
