Which is the best automatic gearbox?

Which type of auto gearbox do you recommend, taking into account smoothness and reliability?

Traditional torque converter automatics are very well proven and have been refined over several decades of use. They don't offer the shift speed or response of dual-clutch units but tend to be less abrupt and jerky, particularly around town. However, CVT gearboxes (particularly those mated to hybrids) are notoriously long-lasting and usually smooth unless you regularly use the car's full performance, when the rising revs can be intrusive.
