Insuring a temporary driver - how can I lower the price?
My son is coming home from Poland for Christmas. He's lived in Poland since September 2017 and returned regularly since many times over the years, and been insured on either my car or my wife's, for very little extra. He's had a full UK licence since 2013, clean, no claims and is a school teacher out there. T he fly in the ointment is that in September 2020, being a resident, he was required to swap his UK licence for a Polish/EU equivalent. The quotes I've had for him to use my car over Christmas for a fortnight are £100-175, which is prohibitive! It would seem the insurance companies are treating him as a relatively newly qualified EU driver! I would be grateful for any advice on lowering this. I have tried short term insurance companies most won't consider him!

If you have not done this already, I would suggest speaking on the phone to your insurer and explaining the situation as they may be able to override the algorithm which is treating him as an inexperienced driver and pushing up the price. Or, in the unlikely event, there is another reason for the price difference they will be able to explain it. You could also try speaking to an insurance broker.
