Can I ask for a refund on my camper van I've just bought?

I purchased a 1985 camper van eight days ago. The seller was eager to deliver the motor to me, which they did. Only two miles into my first journey the van started smoking and oil was pouring out of the side of the engine. I have contacted the seller who is on holiday so I am unable to return the vehicle and the seller wants to send a mechanic to inspect. Can I ask for a refund or do I have to accept this option? I have noticed other issues such as cardboard used to repair a panel, the indicator not working and the handbrake cable is snapped on one side.

Unfortunately, because this was a private sale you don’t have as many rights as you would have if you had bought it from a dealer (see our guide: www.honestjohn.co.uk/how-to-reject-a-car-your-cons...e).

You could argue that the van wasn’t accurately described (if, for instance, the advert said it was in “perfect condition”) and ask for a refund on those grounds. However, the seller could argue the van is in reasonable condition for its age and they are acting in good faith by sending a mechanic round.

The key thing is to remain civil and work with the seller to reach a resolution.
