Scamdal in the wind

Is there a scam going on with insurance companies? Two have tried it on almost one after the other. I changed my car to a different spec vehicle and updated my policy, which meant changing the policy and extending it to account for the time difference as the date changed. They asked me my annual mileage and I said 12,000. We agreed the new premium but when the schedule arrived, it said 8,000 miles annually. I queried this and they said it would cost me £35 to upgrade to 12,000. I said the premium was agreed on the basis of 12,000 and I didn't see why I should pay for their mistake. As they wouldn't back down, I cancelled. I immediately went to another company and exactly the same thing happened, although they only wanted £15 extra. I was furious and gave them a tirade and threatened to go elsewhere at which point they said the fee would be waived. Readers should be warned of this. How can I prove that I said 12,000 miles? To cap it all, the first company is still asking for the £21 to cover the extended period, even though I never took out the new policy.

Madness. But that's what happens when private equity firms and investment banks buy insurance companies. It’s indirectly how the bankers earn their million pound bonuses from the suffering of the rest of us.
