I have read your column for some years to gain some insight into the motor world. I just thought that I might amuse you, and possibly your readers with my new car purchase. I am approaching the magic 60 and thought that I deserved a luxurious car before I was too old to appreciate it. Also bearing in mind the shot state of the economy I felt the least I could do was to contribute some more. So I am trying to sell my BMW 320 coupe, 2002, and have bought a 2002 Mercedes CL600, 44,000 miles for £13,500. Changing a car that does some 32 miles per gallon to one that might, on a short journey do 10 MPG should sort out the country’s deficit in no time. However, it is by far the most luxurious and exciting car I have ever driven. I recommend anyone to experience true luxury before it’s too late. It has more gismos than the Tardis, and can nearly reach the same speed.

May not be so bad. Fearful of getting 20mpg out of an XJR I took on a 650 mile journey I wound up averaging 28mpg, and that was cruising at sensible near-legal speeds. In October 2002 the CL600 was upgraded with twin turbos that pulled the power up from 367bhp to 500bhp, giving Ferrari performance in Mercedes luxury.
