Automated mangler

My 2005 Mazda 2 Capella automatic "died" after going a few yards. The AA couldn't fix it so towed it to my trusted garage. They tried 2 different diagnostic machines but got "locked" out each time. They took it to the Mazda dealership and the same thing happened there. Mazda contacted Ford/Mazda and say they are still puzzled. It could be:- the gearbox, the clutch, the control unit (which apparently they have never had to replace ever and don't even know where to get one at short notice). My garage is unhappy. He thinks it's possibly the clutch. He says he drove it when the AA dropped it off, for about 100yds in auto mode. Then it 'died' on him. Whatever happens, it seems Mazda wants to do one thing at a time to eliminate what it might be, but they are all going to cost, and in the long run, one isn't addressing a known fault. Have you any knowledge of this type of problem?

Sorry, no. But you might find greater familiarity with this automated manual system, also fitted to the Fiesta and Fusion, at a Ford dealer.
