The heart of the matter

Sorry for the lack of technical terminology here - but the oil light on my 1.7 turbo diesel Astra (Isuzu engine) began flickering (not on constantly) a few weeks ago. The oil level was fine, and there were no other 'symptoms' in the drive itself but I had the oil and oil filter changed. The oil level has since still been fine, but the light still flickers. I have brought a new oil level sensor (sorry of that's not the right word) but have no idea where abouts in the engine it goes, and cant see the existing one anywhere. Is there any way you can tell me where to look?

That might not be the problem. The flickering might be low oil pressure because the oil pump is failing or the sump filter is blocked. (R.E. e-mailed back to tell me that, unfortunately, I was right about the oil pump.)
