Institute of Advanced Manslaughter

I quote from the IAM handbook - "Advanced Driving - the essential guide" in which and I quote, from page 46: "As a rule, left foot braking is best avoided, it is a tricky technique that's best left to Scandinavian rally drivers" and that is from the latest and current edition and not a two year old edition. But of course this could always be a misprint or maybe I'm just reading it wrong and of course if the IAM is talking up it's own exhaust pipe. Maybe I am wrong.

Well all I can say, and you can quote me on this, is that advice is both
prejudiced and plainly idiotic. And following it is possibly killing as many as 120 people a year (I can quote examples). Just because the person writing the handbook has inadequate control of his limbs he has 'automatically' assumed that everyone does, and that is a very dangerous assumption. My advice is and has always been: To be sure of remaining fully in control of an automatic, always manoeuvre it two footed, left foot ready to brake at any time. Out on the open road, whether you left foot brake or right foot brake depends on how co-ordinated you are. But do not ever allow your own lack of co-ordination to become dogma printed in a driving manual. To make snide comments about Scandinavian drivers is even worse. In Finland you have to learn to control slides on snow and ice before you can even get a driving licence. The relevant pages you quote of this driver's manual should be torn out and binned before they kill more pedestrians.
