Eve of destruction

I would be grateful for your advice relating to the purchase of a vehicle under the scrappage scheme. I have yet to collect my new vehicle but the garage concerned has stated I need to provide them with my old vehicle approximately 4-5 days prior to me collecting my new vehicle. They state this is to allow the scrap dealer to scrap the car and provide the relevant certificate of scrappage to the dealer prior to me collecting my new vehicle. In my mind this is somewhat nonsensical as the invoice I have from the garage confirms the car is valid for scrappage and the dealer concerned has had copies of all the relevant documents from me in addition to other forms of identity they have requested such as drivers licence and insurance. Also, as far as I can see, the scrappage money via the Government is paid directly to the manufacturer and as previously stated, the dealer knows by the information I have already provided that my vehicle is eligible for scrappage. I have three major concerns. 1. This is inconvenient as I use my vehicle for work and leaves me with no transport for 4-5 days. 2. If my vehicle is scrapped and then a problem occurs with my newly ordered vehicle, for instance a fire at the premises, some accidental damage to the vehicle, or I am not satisfied for some reason I will remain without a car for an even longer period and my old car could be no more whereas I would require it back in those circumstances to continue using it until I took delivery of the new vehicle. 3. This seems to me to be absolutely shocking customer service by the dealership involved. I am concerned why the dealer is acting in this way and is there some ulterior motive.

The dealer has only 14 days from the day it supplies your new car to get a certificate of destruction for the old car, get it to the manufacturer and for the manufacturer to get it to the relevant government department, otherwise they lose the £1,000 of government money they have already handed to you. So some sympathy with the dealer's position is required here.
