Degrees of uncertainty

I have a 1997P Peugeot 306 1.9TD (facelift model). My water light on the dash is coming on and off. I checked the coolant pod and it was fine on Thursday but I topped it up anyway. I drove the car all weekend and it was fine. This morning the light came on again and the container was nearly empty, so I guess I have a leak. Where can I check this and will it be expensive to repair? Can I do it myself?

This XUD engine is notorious for creating airlocks in its cooling system and has various bleed points to relieve them. But not a DIY job. Needs to be done by someone with experience. While they are doing it, a wise precaution would be a new engine coolant thermostat.
