Fog fright

When we took our Skoda Octavia 2005 for its second MoT, today, we were told that the foglight was illegal as it was on the wrong side of the car, on the passenger side. He passed the car with a comment on the yellow advisory notice: “Offside Rear fog lamp affected by the operation of another lamp [1.1.6f]”. Though my husband says that there isn't a fitting for a bulb on the offside. The mechanic said that he thought we had a left hand lighting loom in a right hand car and advised us to go back to Skoda, which we will do. Do you have any comments or advice, please? We have had this car since new and this wasn't picked up in last year's MOT.

Yes, unless you have had crash repairs to the car, you have a misbuild and the dealer who sold it to you is legally compelled to put it right. He has no way out of this. If he refuses, notify www.vosa.gov.uk, have the matter rectified elsewhere, and use the Small Claims Track of the County Court to sue him for the cost. In the old days when rear-engined Skodas were assembled by convicts it was common for them to deliberately switch wiring so front left and rear right indicators operated simultaneously.
