Please can you help with my dilemma? I'm a bit of a car snob and like my premium brands, I drive a BMW E90 330i M Sport, which I love and my wife drives an old Focus that is now getting a bit long in the tooth. We currently have 2 children, age 6 and 3. My problem is that child no.3 is on the way and we don’t know what to do about the cars. Generally the BMW gets used as the family car during weekends and during the week it is my motorway cruiser for business miles. We also do a fair bit of travelling as a family on holidays and visits to see friends and family so it is important that the family car is one that I like. We have also started to note a trend that we rarely use both cars at the same time and so it is proving uneconomical to keep them both. The problem is out of the options I cannot find a setup that a) fits all the family in b) is a good drivers car c) fits within my budget. In my mind we have two options, 1) sell the Focus, replace it with a reasonably priced MPV and I keep the BM. 2) sell the focus and BM and replace it with one car that does the lot. Option 1) I think gives me the most flexibility in what I drive but I can’t get round the fact that it would invariable cost me more, despite that the option for reasonably priced MPVs is limited, so far on my short list I have a Toyota Verso, Honda FRV (preferred) and (Fiat Multipla). The S Max would be on the list but comes in at a tad over budget, the Verso is probably the best in terms of price and ongoing cost but I cannot deny the practicality of a car that can seat 6 and still have a boot.

Ford S-Max 2.5T. The first 7-seat sports car. 220PS standard. Chippable to a lot more. Handling that will embarrass your 330i on roundabouts. 3 across the middle seating. All centre row seats slide and fold. Two more seats in the boot that fold away under the floor.
Dear Honest John,
