Why does my car drop out of first gear?

I have a problem with my gearbox popping out of first gear. The rest of the gears are fine. What could this be?

Either a worn shifter spring or a fault with the synchronizer within the gearbox. If it's a spring then it shouldn't be a costly cost job (the springs hold the gear in place). If the synchro has gone then you'll be looking at an expensive gearbox rebuild or replacement.
