I am wondering if you could help guide me as to the best way to obtain a new car and what it should be. I have Ford Fiesta on a 58 plate that is a 1.25 model. I use this as a driving school car and despite manufacturers claims that it is possible to get 68mpg I can get nowhere near this figure. I appreciate driving school cars would not achieve these high figures but I have recently checked out the consumption that I have recently obtained and found it to be as low as 34mpg. I have had a Corsa 1.2 which gave me around 40mpg and a Peugeot 206 that gave nearly 42mpg. I am very disappointed that the fuel consumed is so high. I was inclined towards diesel last year but now the differential has narrowed a lot so much so that diesel is on a par with petrol, in fact on the continent it is almost 10% less. The cars that I have experience of driving recently are the Toyota Yaris Diesel and also the Renault Clio diesel. The Renault certainly seems more spacious, which would make it good for personal use. Is there any car that might fit my requirements better? I drive around 30,000 miles a year. I would also appreciate your input on whether you think contract hire, leasing or outright purchase works out better.

A driving school car may be more economical on diesel but with a current generation diesel engine is likely to suffer EGR valve, Diesel Particulate Filter and Dual Mass Flywheel problems because of the way it will be run. (Unusually, the latest Fiesta diesels don’t have Dual Mass Flywheels.) So I would go for petrol. I get over 50mpg from a FIAT 500 1.2 petrol, mixed use, and BSM is about to start running 14,000 of them. But better to wait for the 2010MY suspension improvements. I can’t tell you if leasing/contract hire makes best sense for 30,000 miles a year with hundreds of different drivers. Try
