Perplexused
I have a Lexus LS430 at the moment, which is just over three years old, and only completed 26,700 miles, I am contemplating changing it for the LS460, Last week a hired a Golf Plus with a diesel engine in Germany and I was most impressed by the engine’s torque and fuel economy, so I am wondering whether I would be better off buying a MB 350 CDI car, even though I have never had a diesel car in my many years of motoring. Would I be better buying the LS460, the MB 350 CDI, or keeping my present car for a few more years as my wife would prefer? As you will see I only do a very low mileage in the year, although I do like two or three continental trips per year. I would appreciate your knowledge and wisdom on the subject.

All the extra emissions kit on modern diesels is a big problem for them. There’s more to go wrong and more dies go wrong, particularly of the car does a high proportion of short runs from cold and running in traffic in cities. There is no way an S350CDI or an E350CDI can possibly have the sheer thrust and uncanny silence of an LS460, though, of late, these have been best bought 2nd hand because of the colossal depreciation they suffered. An expensive alternative is, of course, an LS600h, emulated less successfully by MB in the form of the S400h. LS600h tested (to 160mph) at www.honestjohn.co.uk
