RAV counter

We have a 52 plate 61,000 mile RAV-4 D-4D. The car has been owned by us for the last two years. Earlier this year, at 55,000 miles, we lost the use of 5th gear and also the water pumped started to leak. Toyota were not interested in offering any goodwill as the vehicle, although regularly serviced by a local garage, had not been serviced by a Toyota main agent for the last couple of years. This cost us £1,500 to rectify including other minor service items. The car then performed well for approx. 4 months, when we started to notice a rasping noise under acceleration. This has deteriorated quite rapidly and I have taken it to a main agent and they have confirmed my suspicion that the dual mass flywheel and clutch assembly are disintegrating. The main dealer has quoted £1,600 to rectify the fault and the cheapest non-franchised repair will cost in excess of £900. Interestingly, when I was in the service reception of the main agent, there was a couple with a younger RAV4 with exactly the same fault. Do you know if this and the gearbox problems are commonplace in this vehicle? I would be interested to hear your views although I do not expect any goodwill from Toyota. We have decided to get rid of the car as we have lost confidence in it and have been offered £4,000 in part-exchange for the Toyota unrepaired against a Nissan Qashqai 2 litre Acenta 5 door with 14,000 miles on the clock. It is a 58 plate and priced at £12,999. Do you think this is a reasonable deal under the circumstances?

Yes, DMF problems are common on early RAV-4 2.0D-4Ds. But yours is nearly 8 years old, 1 year older than its design life, so the
clutch and DMF have lasted quite well. Yes, good idea to get it gone and £4k is a fair offer. A Qashqai Acenta is a good choice, having 16" wheels and reasonably absorbent tyres. The ride and pothole resistance deteriorates on 17" and 18" wheels.
