I for one will not be putting my hand into my pocket to change my car under this joke of a scrappage scheme. My fabulous Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI SE bought new in September 1999 for £22k still looks immaculate, regularly returns +55mpg (50 with ease), drives as it did when it had 20k miles: no rattles, tight, comfortable, still on the original engine, exhaust, clutch, gearbox etc - driven with tender loving care and respect, so it rewards me with 150k untroubled miles and only asks for a £80 annual service. One of the best cars on the road - never a truer word was said - you get what you pay for. It’s worth a lot more to me than its market value. I will run this car into the ground so I reckon at least another 150k miles to go.

Keep me informed about how you get on. But this isn't a joke of a scheme. It is stimulating people to buy new cars and that is helping to jump start the economy. As well as that, unlike MP’s expenses, it costs the taxpayer nothing. If a car sells for £7,500 under the scrappage scheme the government gets £1,008 in VAT and a £55 first registration fee, which it would not otherwise have got, so that more than makes up for the £1,000 it puts in. Driving your reliable old car is the economic equivalent of keeping all your money under your mattress rather than allowing it to circulate and benefit everyone. But some people have rushed into scrapping nice old cars that would have fetched more if simply sold as runners.
