down and try to 'straddle' the hole, then breath a sigh of relief when they clear it. This is actually a non-destructive speed control device in use. Very clever, especially if moved around each day.

J.M. is referring to a brilliant advertising stunt for Pioneer Suspension in which highly realistic photos of massive potholes were printed onto plastic sheets and laid on the road surface. (The Americans call them “sinkholes”.)
