Naught to sixty
I'd be grateful if you would recommend a model of sport car in the region £55,000-£60,000. I wonder what your views are regarding the Merc SL500/350, Porsche 911, Jaguar XKR, Aston Martin Vantage/DB9 or Maserati. I prefer something reliable and good value for money.

They are all wonderful and way out of my price bracket. MB revised the SL500 and upped the power to 388PS in 2006. This transformed the car from a boulevard cruiser into a sports car, and so it remained until they waved the ugly stick at it about a year ago. Your money doesn't get you the latest 5.0 litre Jaguar XK, but it does buy its immediate predecessor. Nice cars with an excellent paddleshift torque converter transmission and a sensational exhaust note. You could also get a DB9. My friend bought one last year before the price crash and has done 12,000 reliable miles in it. But they are very high maintenance items. A Porsche 911 on the face of it seems the most practical (4 seats). But they are high maintenance too. The Maserati could be good, might be bad. Another friend has an older 3200 auto and that has been reliable, but he's used to this type of car having run a couple of Venturis, so knows how to look after it.
