Apulling prospect

We are looking for a new car 4 wheel drive car or estate car, but not an SUV to tow our caravan. We drive about 6,000 miles a year of which at least 3,000 is towing the caravan, we tow all the year round. The rest is local town and open country driving. A 2 litre turbo diesel or 2 litre petrol engine would be adequate. We tend towards the diesel as although there is a higher initial cost there would be some saving on fuel costs, more on VED (possibly much more in a few years) and it would be better at towing. However the DPF bothers us, some dealers think it would be no problem with our mix of driving, others say you need to be driving along a motorway every week if you want to avoid problems. Your views would be much appreciated.
