Tyres they are a changin’

I got tyres for my Peugeot 406 2.0 LX Petrol (195/65R15 91V) in October 2007, and they worked out at £47.00 each (fully inclusive).
I now own a Ford Focus 1.6 Style Petrol (205/55R16 91V) and notice that tyres are a lot more expensive at say £70.00 each (fully inclusive). In both cases I would be having mid range tyres. I assumed that as I would be having standard size tyres on both cars that the smaller Ford Focus would have tyres priced similar to the 406 rather than such a big difference. Please can you explain the big price differential?

Lower profile tyres are dearer. But the price of tyres in the UK in general has gone up because since 2007 Sterling has fallen 30% to 50% against the currencies of the countries where the raw materials for the tyres (or the tyres themselves) come from. Blame Brown.
