Steer crazy
We have a newly acquired 2002 Peugeot 307 SW SE HDI. Its steering and roadholding give us cause for concern (especially compared with our old R reg Mondeo 2.0 estate). The 307 slithers on white lines and road markings, and our much-patched roads also seem to give it some entertainment. It is as if the front two wheels have independent lives. We have had the steering looked at and they said it was safe and re-set the tracking, though we detect little difference. We need to buy 2 new tyres (fairly soon), it is fitted with Pirelli P6000 205/55 R16 (91V) and they are quite worn on the inside.
One tyre centre recommended Goodyear (Premium?) at £85 inc VAT or Fulda Excellero at £65 inc VAT. My usual supplier has recommended Kleber Dynaxer DR for £76 inc VAT. He is most emphatic that they will transform its roadholding, I am inclined to trust him. Will different tyres improve it? Will they make the car noisier or use more fuel? Or, is it the car that is the problem?

I don’t know any of the recommended tyres so can’t tell you how they will perform. But I suspect the front suspension bushing of the 307 is worn, allowing movement. That would also explain the uneven tyre wear. These cars normally handle very well because they load their front suspension heavily. But after 7 years this can lead to wear in the bushings
