Insurance saga
I have just received my car insurance renewal quote from Saga Insurance that has gone up by a whopping 25%. The blurb that they have sent me is full of comments that this quote is very competitive but if I can find a cheaper quote they will match it. A quick look at a Car Insurance web site shows there are at least 30 companies offering cheaper policies many with better conditions. Please warn your readers not to blindly renew with these people as they are certainly not competitive. There have been no changes to our policy at all. We are both retired, drive 4,000 miles a year, have at least 20 years no claim bonus and no convictions. When I rang Saga the reply was that they have raised the cost of some of their policies by 25% - ours is obviously one of them. Saga says it specialises in selling to older, safer drivers and gives the impression that it is cheaper for this part of the market. This may have been true but is clearly not so now although Saga continues to advertise on this basis.

Maybe the underwriting risk to Saga has gone up. That could happen. If its business is heavily weighted towards older drivers and claims from older drivers started to rise, then it would have to increase premiums to those drivers. Other insurers with a far lower exposure to older drivers might not see such a heavy increase in claims.
