I'd recommend the Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC diesel (built from 2012 to 2017). It's comfortable and smooth on the motorway, easy to drive and returns around 65mpg on-the-road: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/honda/civic-2012
