How can I improve my Honda Civic's economy?
I bought a 2012 Honda Civic 1.8 EX i-VTEC in February, swapping it for my 2006 2.2i-CTDi. The overwhelming 'feature' of the new car is its enormous thirst for petrol and I am wondering whether there could be a problem as the engine feels stifled below about 4000rpm and with the ECO button off.
In my old car I used to get 48mpg and regularly over 50mpg even with spirited driving in that car. In the new one I am struggling to keep mpg up to 35 after a month of long trips and around town.

I got 45mpg from the 2006-2012 Civic 1.8iVTEC and 48mpg from the 2013 Civic 1.8iVTEC. Real mpg isn't quite as good but some of those drivers will have been running on standard 95Ron petrol.
Switch to Shell V-Power Nitro Plus and if you don't average more than 40mpg on reasonable length runs then there is something wrong with the car. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/honda
