My daughter is starting a three-year posting in Pretoria (South Africa) in early June and has special rates to purchase a vehicle. She is keen to explore some of the wildlife in the area and is interested in buying a 4X4 that is good off road as well as good on tarmac. I am swayed towards a Land Rover Defender or Discovery but I am not too sure she is so keen. Have you any suggestions? Your comments would be greatly appreciated

Defenders aren't good on road, but are sensational off it. Discovery IIIs are nice but very BIG. Toyotas LCs are less reliable than they used to be, but Toyota may still make more basic LandCruiser models for the African market. An important consideration is availability of spare parts. Toyota has a plant in South Africa turning out pick ups, and a 4x4 HiLux doublecab might do the job. That's the vehicle Clarkson drove to the North Pole a year or so ago.
