My grand-daughter was driving her 2001 VW Polo in the outside lane of the M25 last week when her clutch system failed. Fortunately, with the aid of flashers, good driving, courtesy from other drivers, and a very large dose of good luck, she reached the hard shoulder safely.

But the car is 8 years old, 1 year older than its design life. You cannot expect a manufacturer to bear any responsibility for at this age even if the fault is well known.
