Higher SEAT
I currently have a SEAT Cupra R, so enjoy a bit of decent motoring. My parents are 89 and 90 respectively, so the SEAT is a pain for them to get in and out of. I don’t want an MPV with 7 seats. I have shortlisted the Freelander mark 2 diesel, Rav 4 180, CRV diesel, Nissan X Trail 173 diesel. I have test-driven the Freelander, which for me has the best looks of the bunch and, whilst a comfortable ride, lacks pace. Good torque, but slow and if I go automatic more expensive on fuel and emissions. The petrol version is poor on both.
The RAV did not do it on looks. Performance is better, was not as comfortable or spacious sitting in it.. I would expect good reliability.
Everybody tells me that the CRV is very comfortable, but a bit slow.
Its looks don't grab me. Finally the X-Trail a late consideration. Looks to have an engine to match the RAV T180. I am looking for handling, performance, low emissions, comfortable ride on the road, off-road a minor consideration, good carrying capacity, reliability. Which is it to be?

Look for deals rather than specific cars and buy on that basis. For example, in January, www.drivethedeal.com had Ford Kugas from £15,700, and they handle better than any other SUV. Also Freelander 2.2 diesels from £16,700. You'll find the same 2.2 as in the Freelander in the Citroen C-Crosser, Mitsubishi Outlander and Peugeot 4007. I really liked the new Audi Q5 (surprised myself). The Volvo XC60 is good, too. Yes, the X-Trail 173 romps away, but you can only get an autobox with the 150 and that's a bit slow. Most of these (X3 and Freelander excepted) are tested at www.honestjohn.co.uk Freelander Stop Start test coming soon.
