Remote possibility
We own a 2002 Golf, bought in 2004, and a 2005 Octavia, bought in the Spring of 2006. The cars are kept side by side on our drive. Both have remote central locking. In February 2007 (after nearly a year of simultaneously owning both) we suddenly found the Golf unlocked (and locked) when the Octavia remote was used. On contacting our local VAG dealer, we were told "we get two or three instances of this a year". However, they advised that they could recode one car "a long way from the other", and we duly paid some £20 for this work. I was lead to think there was more chance of winning the Lottery than having a recurrence, but as you have probably already guessed, that is exactly what has happened. Again the Octavia remote unlocks both cars simultaneously (although the converse is not the case with the Golf key). This has lead me to wonder just how common this problem is, and whether there are instances in say car parks where you unwittingly unlock somebody else's car. Barring an opportunist thief, it is arguably not a major problem because the lock/alarm resets after 30 seconds if a door is not opened. Nevertheless, it is not good.

This could be because the ECUs for the locking systems are inside the driver's doors where they are susceptible to moisture ingress that crosses contacts. There are lots of stories of Audi and VW owners coming back to their cars to find all the windows mysteriously open.
