I was wondering if you could offer me any advice on buying a cheap and reliable car to get me around Australia? I am in Melbourne on a working holiday visa, and am working and saving up cash to buy a car that will be able to transport myself, my girlfriend and our luggage up the east coast to Darwin over the next few months. I have a budget of around $2000, with which I hope to purchase a vehicle with a few months registration left. I have been advised by my colleagues that my best bet would be to find an old Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore, as they are reliable, comfortable and plentiful for spares even in remote areas of the outback. My concern with these cars is that they generally have very large engines (3.0-4.5 litres) and do not strike me as particularly economical to run if travelling long distances. Some come with LPG conversions (which seems to be a great deal more popular here than the UK) but again, I have my reservations about LPG conversions in older vehicles which were not designed with the tolerances required for LPG, are my concerns justifiable? LPG would be a great cost saver as it is around 44 cents a litre here, less than half the cost of a litre of petrol. There is an abundance of second hand cars in Australia at the moment, as the exchange rates have forced new car dealers to slash the prices for 2008 plated stocks, so it is a buyers market for second hand cars. Any advice you could offer me would be much appreciated.

I'd go with the local advice. Not much point in an economical little Japanese car if it breaks when you hit the first rock. LPG generally suits older, less sophisticated engines better than new ones and there aren't actually many different 6-cylinder engines in these cars, so the knowledge base for the conversions is a good one. You need a big, lazy engine to work the a/c pump without a significant fuel consumption penalty.
Dear Honest John,
