I am in the market for a new Honda Jazz, either an automatic 1.4ES I-Shift or the 1.4 EX I-Shift and have a Honda Jazz 1.4 automatic with 42k miles on the clock, purchased in 2005. I have been offered £5,500 for my car in exchange for either of the above but the garage tells me that Honda will not allow any reductions in the price of the Jazz i.e. £12,670 for the ESi or £13,970 for the EXi hence they ask of me a cheque for £8,235 for the EXi and £7,000 for the ESi, though both offers would include a five year free service which they have told me is worth £350 a years road tax and a tank of petrol. Is the garage correct about Honda's attitude re reducing prices and are the offers being made realistic in the light of news that Honda are laying off staff in Swindon with full pay in Feb and March and will restart production of the Jazz next Autumn? I thought that they would either now or maybe a bit later be prepared to negotiate.

The Jazz is not yet made at Swindon, so the current models all have to be shipped from Japan. It will be built in Swindon from the Summer, but that has no influence on deals you can get now. You might find you can do a deal on a pre-facelift Civic 1.8 I-Shift that
pulls it down to less then the price of a new Jazz. There are fields of unsold Civics, which is the reason for the factory shut down in February/March.
