Fan heater
I bought a VW Tiguan about nine months ago and I regularly drive just under 1,000 miles per month. At times, when the engine is switched off, a fan in the engine compartment starts. This normally runs for about five minutes and then stops. However, about every two or three months (and so far only after a short journey of not more that four miles), the fan starts but at very high revolutions. This is accompanied by a burning rubber smell. I took it to the dealer after the second time that this happened but they could find nothing (and, of course, I was unable to demonstrate the problem because it happens intermittently). Subsequently I have experimented and find that, when this happens, by re-starting the engine, the fan takes on a more normal tone and speed and, shortly afterwards, stops. In spite of the garage's statement, I remain convinced that there is a glitch somewhere. Any thoughts?

If this is a diesel then the "problem" is probably the diesel particulate
filter. It will have superheated to start to regenerate, creating enough temperature for the fan sensor to activate. That’s the burning smell. When this happens best to keep the engine running or the filter will clog and the engine sump will fill up with diesel fuel.
