I have a 1999 Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor with a genuine mileage of 26,000. As I know very little about car engines could you advise me whether this car has a cam belt which will need replacing in due course or a timing chain which, presumably, will not.

It's a timing chain engine. All Mercedes are, without any exceptions, ever. Even Smarts.
