Nervous, breakdown

I am 82 and my driving licence has been extended for three years. My Honda Jazz SE manual is nearly 8 years old and although it’s done only 38,000 mileage and has been trouble-free, I expect it’s only a question of time before it breaks down. I am absolutely dreading this, particularly if it should occur during my frequent 26 mile return journeys late at night, including an unlit section of a former motorway (now A414). To reduce the chance of this happing I am wondering whether to ask my garage to replace any parts likely to fail suddenly. Would this be practicable and financially viable? For peace of mind, I suppose the alternative is to trade-in for a more up to date version.

Not really. Best not to fix anything that isn't broken. No timing belt to worry about on this engine. But it may well be that your local garage has not serviced the car fully to Honda standards and has not done some of the jobs that would have been scheduled at a Honda dealer, such as a change of gearbox oil. So it may be worth booking it into the Honda dealer for a full service update.
