Should I steer clear of a Cat S?
You have recommended various second-hand cars for me to buy. While looking I have come across a MINI which says it is a Cat S, hence the low price. Should I steer clear of this?

A Cat S means the car has "structural" damage as a result of a previous accident where the car was declared a total loss by the insurance company. I would avoid it like the plague, stay well clear of any previous total loss unless you are an experienced engineer that knows what they are looking at.
