Wheeler deals

You have recently advocated the use of winter tyres and I am exploring this possibility for next winter. I would prefer to buy a new set of wheels and tyres, and whilst there is a wide choice of tyres and alloy wheels, the Internet has revealed little information about where to buy new steel wheel rims. Would steel rims be a cheaper and acceptable option or must alloys be used. I drive a Nissan X-trail with 17-inch alloy rims using 215/60 Pirelli STR tyres, but would prefer to buy 16-inch rims, as these would give a wider choice of winter tyres. Your advice would be appreciated together with any details of steel wheel rim stockists.

The basic Trek model comes with 16" alloy wheels, not steels. So these must be available. You might be able to get steels as a special order, but will then also have to buy a different set of shouldered wheel bolts, as they are different for steel wheels. If the UK Nissan dealer won't help then use the Internet. Steels are fitted in other EU markets. Two specialists supplying winter tyres pre-fitted to steel wheels are: www.mytyres.co.uk/Steel_wheels.html and www.Wheel-Base.co.uk
